ABOUT ANIMAL-MENTE

WHO AM I?

My name is Elisa.

I’m not particularly fond of talking about myself, but I think it’s only fair that you know who you’re entrusting your four-legged friends to… so here I am!

I hold a PhD in Behavioral Biology and have been working as a researcher for many years. I am also deeply involved in science communication, sharing what I have learned and discovered while striving to bring as many people as possible closer to understanding animal behavior and cognition.

But beyond theory, there is practice: I am a dog educator and puppy specialist. And yes, I am also a true “cat lover” at heart, and I continue to expand my knowledge to better understand our feline companions.

Science, animals, and a healthy dose of irony and passion…

In short, a decidedly beastly mix! 🐾

ANIMAL-MENTE’S PHILOSOPHY!

For millennia, dogs and cats have been our companions. Yet how much do we truly know about them?

Today, companion animals are fully-fledged members of the modern family, which is increasingly evolving into a truly multi-species little community. This cultural transformation invites us to adopt a new perspective and embrace an essential understanding: sharing our lives with an animal means learning a different language, developing new ways of communicating, and acquiring the knowledge needed to correctly interpret their signals, needs, and emotions.

The complexity of the human–animal relationship highlights the importance of true professional expertise. Understanding animals, supporting their well-being, managing their needs, and accurately interpreting their behaviour are skills that require years of education, practical experience, and continuous professional development. This is a highly specialised profession, yet one that is still too often underestimated and not always afforded the recognition it deserves. The knowledge and competencies required to work responsibly and effectively with animals are both specific and indispensable.

ANIMAL-MENTE was founded with a simple mission: to help people and their dogs or cats better understand one another and thrive together.

Why the name “Animal-Mente”?

Animal-Mente is a coined name, created as a play on words between animal and mente, the Italian word for mind. I chose this name because it can be understood on several levels, much like the way I approach my work with animals.

Of course, the word animal comes first and foremost. Animals have been at the heart of everything I do for many years. Observing them, understanding them, and caring for them while respecting their nature, needs, and individuality is the passion that guides me every day. My work also involves the people who share their lives with them, with the goal of improving communication, understanding, and the relationship between humans and animals.

At the same time, the word mente (mind) refers to the inner and living dimension that I strive to consider in my work. Here, the concept of the mind goes beyond cognitive abilities alone. It encompasses a subjective world of emotions, thoughts, perceptions, and lived experiences. Every animal has its own unique way of experiencing the world, and true well-being depends on our ability to understand and respect that individual perspective.

Ultimately, this name reflects a way of working. For me, it means approaching animals with awareness, sensitivity, and respect, always placing the relationship at the centre. It is an invitation to look beyond behaviour and connect with the individual behind it.
